Zone 4 -30 to 20 degrees F (-34 to 29 degrees C)
The geographic regions and plant communities covered by Zone 4 are many and varied, however, they have one thing in common: cold winters that make selection of hardy plants a challenge for gardeners. Most areas within the zone were subject to the effects of glaciers in the most recent, or Pleistocene glaciation. When the glaciers retreated to the polar regions some 10,000 to 12,00 years ago, they left behind a clean slate of mostly deep, rich till (post-glacial) soils. In many places, however, bare bedrock was left exposed. By 4,000 to 6,000 years ago, the post-glacial soils were stabilized, and the broad vegetation patterns that persist to this day were established. The zone covers a vast area of the Northern Hemisphere (moving in a wide band across the top of the United States and around the Great Lakes, through China and Russia, and over to the Scandinavian countries). The climate is one of extremes. The winter temperature can drop to -30 degrees F (-34 degrees C) for weeks on end. Polar blasts as cold as -45 degrees F (-43 degrees C) are possible. Summer temperatures may soar to around 95 degrees F (35 degrees C), pushed by dry breezes that gain heat over large continental landmasses. Mean annual rainfall can range from 10 to 40 in (250 to 1,000mm). Where rainfall exceeds evapotranspiration, forests dominate. Grasslands occupy areas where there is sufficient summer moisture of trees.
