The term "indicator plant" is often used to describe botanically what might be found native to specific regions or soil types, but the idea of indicator plants can also be used in the observation of neighbors' gardens and of other plants in our neighborhoods. Carefully noting which plants flourish in an area provides valuable information about local conditions. Broadly, if one lives along the eastern seaboard and sees on the horizon thickets of red maples (Acer rubrum) and birches, it can be assumed that there is wet ground, or at least general moisture to work with. If, however, in the same area, there are oaks and kalmia, than it's safe to say wet spots won't be a problem, though there might be rocks to contend with. In the West, along the Pacific Coast, if western red cedars (Thuja plicata) abound and there are rhododendrons in full sun, either rainfall is high, or the garden is protected by the coolness and moisture of the coast, or your neighbors have been particularly daring. Taking the time to notice what's growing well in a neighbor's garden or on a near by hillside is a wonderful shortcut to discovering what might be successful in your immediate area.
