Native planting and restoration

Along with considering the sustainability of our gardens, we are giving new thought to the natural landscape around us, restoration of native areas, and ways of using both local and regional native plants in our landscapes.  Increasingly, nurseries are carrying local flora.  One word of caution: especially in western areas of  North America, where land types and climates change quickly over quite short distances, the term "native" can be a bit confusing.  The well-researched gardener is learning to tell between a "native" plant that prefers the edge of a creek and the one found several miles away on a stony hillside.  As well, many plants were, at one time, collected whole from wild areas.  In many places this is no longer allowed and we, as gardeners, now know to ask, helping to ensure the plant was grown  from seeds or cuttings, rather than coming from the wild.

Our new information and awareness makes us conscious, as well, of the few remaining wild areas around us and increasingly protective or their safety.  With greater knowledge of our natural surroundings, gardeners are getting a better grip on restoring areas that have been disturbed and that we would like to see returned to as natural a state as possible.
