In North America, Zone 3 includes varying terrain. In the west, moist conifer-covered mountains with thin, acidic soil are prevalent. From the mountains it spills out onto the vast drier prairies where it widens, encompassing the northern regions of this rich rolling prairie, skirting along the southern extent of the boreal forest. It then swings north again through the boreal forest of central Canada north of the Great Lakes where the ground is smooth glaciated bedrock supporting only thin acidic soil again. In winter, the ground freezes solid in all areas of Zone 3 to at least 24 in (60 cm) below the soil surface and often to 36 in (90cm).
