, you basically do not need anything to practice Yoga. The important thing is the attitude - a big heart and a small ego. Some loose fitting clothes or no clothes at all, and a small secluded spot in your house will be enough for you to start with. A balanced diet (sattwik) also aids a great deal in Yoga Practice. A four hour interval between meals is advised. Practicing with a mat, a blanket and a pillow is recommended. Wear a stretch suit or something similar. To get to know the Basic Yoga Postures or Asanas, you can get them from this website or buy an Introduction to Yoga book, video or DVD. There are lots of Yoga Information sources available in the market. The best way to Get Started with Yoga is to buy a Yoga Kit for beginners.
One of the advantages of Yoga is that it can be practiced almost anywhere, without special equipment, and by people of all ages. In looking for a studio, choose a place that is relatively free from distractions, the place should be quiet, clean and well ventilated. Using a mat, a blanket, or towel will provide support and added comfort when you do lying or sitting positions. It's best to wear loose or stretch clothing, such as shorts, sweat clothes, or leotards. Yoga is traditionally practiced barefoot, however, socks or soft-shoes can be put on. It is also best to practice Yoga on an empty stomach or about one or two hours after a full meal. Empty your stomach, clean your nostril and throat, and consume a glass of warm water 15 minutes before you start. You may eat fruit, energy bar, drink a glass of juice or water an hour before class to avoid getting really hungry during practice.
Practicing first thing in the morning is an excellent way to revitalize the mind and body, while practicing Yoga Breathing and Meditation Exercises at night helps induce a deep, restful sleep. Like in regular exercise, you always start with easy poses to condition your body for the more difficult exercises that follows. Do not strain yourself. Pause when you feel pain or fatigue. Relaxing in between difficult exercises is also beneficial. Yoga Sessions need not be lengthy, but should be done daily. As little as 15 minutes of exercises and 15 minutes of Breathing and Meditation each day can yield benefits.
A Basic Yoga Session need not take too long. A basic session usually follows this order:
Inverted and Balance Poses - inverted and balance poses defies gravity and develops coordination, increase stamina and strength, and improves grace, agility and poise. It also improves you concentration and focus since being quiet is necessary to be able to do these
Please understand, yoga by its very nature is challenging. Yoga literally means "balance". In order to have balance one needs to expose the imbalance and move toward balance. Sometimes it's not easy to see and deal with our imbalances so things get challenging. As humans we tend to have the greatest opportunities for growth in the challenges we encounter. So please experience these challenges positively.
It's time to open, strengthen and awaken!
A yoga class is not a contest between you or anyone you may be practicing with. It isn't even a contest between you and yourself. Forget about how loose and strong you used to be way back when. Give up any aspirations of how loose and strong you hope to be one day. Just be where you are! Make that o.k. Doing yoga correctly means not trying to get anywhere, but being where you are as fully as possible. You'll benefit from class by your effort regardless of how far or deep you get. As long as you are feeling it and you are breathing calmly, you're practicing correctly.
Please don't push too hard. These poses should hurt good, not bad. There has to be a sweetness to every pose. Nothing should ever be excruciating.
Occasionally or maybe more so you may notice yourself getting frustrated, judgmental, critical and reactive.
Use this safe environment to start working on these old habit patterns.
We are all quite attached to our bodies so it is very natural for a lot of things to arise. Please know that calmness and self acceptance are at the very root of balance and health. Without this a fitness regime is very superficial. Without this we are building our whole house on a shaky foundation.
Whenever you catch yourself pushing too hard, realize you may not be accepting where you're at, and let it go! Whenever you catch yourself being self judgmental or critical realize you are really lacking nothing and it's actually the judgments and criticism that's keeping you down. Let it go! Whenever you catch yourself being reactive, let it go! Get calm, even if it means backing off.
Welcome to meditation in motion.
Importantly, don't forget to breathe!
"Part of personal practice is learning what your needs are for that day, that moment, that hour you carve out for practice -- and that takes intuition," . "Yoga is meant to meet your needs day by day and moment by moment, practice should reflect what you are trying to bring into balance at the time."
If you've spent the day staring at the computer, your body may yearn for an energizing, active practice. If you've spent the day hiking, you may decide a soft, restorative practice is in order.
Sun salutations are considered a time-efficient way of practicing. Yogis often follow sun salutations with standing, sitting, and inverted poses. Some yogis plan active asanas for morning practice and leave the more relaxing inverted poses, forward bends, and meditation for evening. Bring balance to your sequence of asanas. Postures that bend or twist to one side should be balanced with postures that bend or twist to the other side. Forward bends balance backbends. Poses that stretch and expand balance poses that curl and contract.
Start with small pockets of time, such as ten minutes, and let your practice grow as you feel the need. Keep yourself motivated by designating a special place in your home for your yoga. It should be quiet and clean -- a space that will absorb the energy of your practice. It should have a yoga mat as well as any props you like to use: a blanket, bolster, blocks, and straps.
Use music to motivate you and experiment with different types of music for different types of practice: inspirational chanting, soft music, African drumming, jazz, rock. Don't rule out anything until you've tried it.
Many people believe that they should leave yoga class or practice feeling tired. That's the old gym mentality -- gotta sweat and get a good workout. Pranksy debunks this myth about yoga. "Yoga should constantly refresh and energize, constantly open our channels. Be mindful of breath. Approach challenging poses not with trying and tension, which can tire you out, but in a way that helps to ground, rejuvenate, and open you. Come from a calm and centered place in even the most challenging of poses. Become spacious, relaxed, and energized."

Yoga Sutras of PatanjaliThe Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are one of the six darshanas of Hindu or Vedic schools and, alongside the Bhagavad Gita and Hatha Yoga Pradipika, are a milestone in the history of Yoga. The book is a set of aphorisms, which are short, terse phrases designed to be easy to memorize. Though brief, the Yoga Sutras are an enormously influential work that is just as relevant for yoga philosophy and practice today as it was when it was written. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali |

KundaliniKundalini is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning either "coiled up" or "coiling like a snake". There are a number of other translations of the term usually emphasizing a more serpent nature to the word— e.g. 'serpent power'. The caduceus symbol of coiling snakes is thought to be an ancient symbolic representation of Kundalini physiology. |

However, in the last half of the 20th century, Zen has become an international phenomenon, with centers in many countries around the world. Zen |
Kundalini Yoga - Awakening the Kundalini Energy Kundalini Yoga is the most powerful Yoga ever known and is considered as the mother of all the Styles of Yoga. It centers on awakening the Kundalini, the energy (serpent power or Bhujangini) which is found at the base of our spine or the Muladhara Chakra. MeditationMeditation refers to any of a wide variety of spiritual practices (and their close secular analogues) which emphasize mental activity or quiescence. The English word comes from the Latin meditation , which originally indicated every type of physical or intellectual exercise, but which later could perhaps be better translated as "contemplation." This usage is found in Christian spirituality, for example, when one "meditates" on the sufferings of Christ; as well as Western philosophy, as in Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy , a set of six mental exercises which systematically analyze the nature of reality. |
ChakraIn Hinduism and its spiritual systems of yoga and in some related eastern cultures, as well as in some segments of the New Age movement -- and to some degree the distinctly different New Thought movement -- a chakra is thought to be an energy node in the human body. The word comes from the Sanskrit cakra meaning "wheel, circle", and sometimes also referring to the "wheel of life". The pronunciation of this word can be approximated in English by chuh kruh ; with ch as in chart and both instances of a as in yoga (the commonly found pronunciation shock rah is incorrect).

Self-realizationIn yoga, self-realization is knowledge of one's true self. This true self is also referred to as the atma to avoid ambiguity. The term "self-realization" is a translation of the Sanskrit expression atma jnana (knowledge of the self or atma). The reason the term "realization" is used instead of "knowledge" is that jnana refers to knowledge based on experience, not mere intellectual knowledge. As discussed in the article on yoga, while the goal of self-realization is the same in all yoga paths, the means used to achieve that goal differ. For example, in Sahajayoga or hatha yoga, self-realization is said to be achieved when the serpent force or kundalini rises through the shushumna nadi to the sahasrara chakra. |
AsanaAsana is a Sanskrit word that literally means a seat but in the practice of yoga refers to a pose or posture. In Patanjali's yoga sutras Asana means, mainly, sitting for meditation. The practice of asana involves stretching and moving the body into various positions. With practice, the body can be made to remain in a given position for a longer period of time, comfortably. When a degree of comfort is attained in a given posture, it becomes Asana . In general, however, the term is also used to refer to physical yoga exercises in general. Asana |
SoulThe soul , according to many religious and philosophical traditions, is the ethereal substance — spirit — particular to a unique living being. Such traditions often consider the soul both immortal and innately aware of its immortal nature, as well as the true basis for sentience in each living being. The concept of the soul has strong links with notions of an afterlife, but opinions may vary wildly, even within a given religion, as to what happens to the soul after death. Many within these religions and philosophies see the soul as immaterial, while others consider it possibly material. Soul |
