Owing to lack of extensive urban settlement in the north of Zone 2, little is known regarding the growing of plants from zones further south. The soils in the north are so infertile that the prospect of establishing a successful garden in daunting, but there are some clues as to how this might be done. When a small boy, the doyen of arctic and subarctic botany, A.E.Porsild, lived in the Arctic and planted a small botanic garden. Later he revisited the area and was surprised to see the outline of his garden still visible. He noticed close by a patch of lush green grass and realized this was on the very spot where he had spilled a wheelbarrow of goat manure intended for his botanic garden. The effects of the manure were still apparent 34 years later.
Provided the garden is placed in a sheltered location, has good snow cover, and the ground is manured, fertilized, and limed, there is no reason why some perennial plants from Zone 3 and 4 could not be grown
