Factors to consider

People garden for the future, but, of course, they also garden for the moment.  On occasion, a winter cold spell brings temperatures well below the zone's averages, damaging or even killing a plant normally expected to perform well.  Reaction to these possibilities should be reserved to the nature of the individual gardener.  Those liking to live life a bit on the wild side might acquire plants knowing they will not be permanent but might try to minimize risk by planting in an area where they can be protected from full sun or frost.

Caution might be best employed where the size and structure of the plant is a consideration  To ensure a long life, a tree or any other anchoring plant could be chosen from a colder zone than the garden it is to be planted in, thereby overcoming the rigors of cold it may experience as a sapling.

Other factors to consider when choosing plants are: length of the frost-free season; whether cold lasts for weeks or months, and, in colder zones, the amount of snowfall, which can act as an insulating blanket for roots.

Another factor is the amount of heat received over the warm season.  Areas of high summer temperature, especially when combined with humidity, are best suited to heat-loving  plants that need to reach full maturity quickly, in preparation for possibly lower temperatures in the winter.  Areas receiving warmth accompanied by cool summer nights are better off with Mediterranean and Southern Hemisphere treasures that would otherwise melt in height summer heat.  Soil conditions and rainfall must be taken into consideration as well, along with the need for mulching, or less water, or drier air.

The more knowledge we have about what kinds of temperatures and other conditions our plants are likely to tolerate, the more our gardens will flourish.  The more, also, we can then keep our special needs plants and proclaim with satisfaction to an envious neighbor that this supposed tender creature has been in our garden for years.
