zone of diverse climates
Most parts of this zone experience medium to high rainfall, without any severe dry season. In the continental interiors, for example in central Asia and the American southwest, this zone is pushed towards lower latitudes by cold air masses expanding from the north in winter. As a result, summers are long and hot and humidity is low for much of the year. These continental climates have more sharply defined seasons and more predictable winter temperatures than those of regions bordering the oceans, where, generally speaking, summers are milder and more humid. Zone 7 is the highest zone in which the soil is likely to be frozen for any length of time in winter, which precludes the growth of many subtropical plants, most notably palms. A point worth considering is that climates change and plants may be caught in a climate warmer or colder than the one in which they originally evolved. It often happens that plants can tolerate more cold or heat than is now recorded in their native homes. Recent winters have been warmer than in the past 10,000 years, so plants found wild in Zone 7 can generally grow in Zones 5 or 6.
